Advice From Hilary Graham

Hello everyone,

Today, I have words of advice for the aspiring writers.  Yesterday, I contacted the author, screenwriter, and director Hilary Graham asking for tips that I could share with my readers.  She responded with a short paragraph talking about the most important thing a writer can do while he/she pursues their dream.

As far as becoming an author and/or a screenwriter, my biggest piece of advice for you and your readers is that it all comes down to perseverance.  It’s not about how many times you get knocked down–because believe me, there’s LOTS of rejection in both professions–it’s about how many times you get back up.  There are so many stories of famous books getting rejected by publishers (Harry Potter was rejected 12 times!) or films taking ten years to get made (which means that studios, directors, financiers, and actors spent nine of those years rejecting the screenplay).  The trick is to never lose faith in yourself and your abilities, while still being able to have a critical eye towards your own work. And just like any other pursuit–tennis, violin playing, cooking–you’ll find that your writing gets better over time.  So the longer you “practice,” the better your odds.

Hope this helps!
If you haven’t heard of Hilary Graham or her work, here is a brief summary of her upcoming novel Reunited.
Back in middle school, Alice, Summer, and Tiernan were inseparable.
They were also the number one fans of the rock band Level3. coverBut when the band broke up, so did the girls’ friendship. Alice spent high school with her nose buried in books, Summer was in the popular crowd, and Tiernan was lucky if she made it to class. Now, just as the girls are about to graduate, Level3 announces a one-time-only reunion show. Even though it’s 2,000 miles away, Alice buys three tickets on impulse—and as it turns out, Summer and Tiernan have their own reasons for wanting to get out of town. And thanks to Alice’s graduation gift (a newly refurbished ’78 VW van affectionately known as the Pea-Pod) they’ve got the perfect vehicle to get them there. But on their cross-country drive, the girls hit more than just a few bumps in the road.

Will their friendship get an encore or is the show really over?

The book just came out, and I’m looking forward to reading it.  I also want to thank Hilary Graham for taking the time out of her day to respond to my email.  Please check out her website here.
Thanks for reading,
Mingakatara
